PHOENIX, NY –  Carole  G. Sponable, 80, of Phoenix, NY, passed away on Friday April 21, 2017, in Syracuse.

She was born to her late parents, Doris E. (Planck) and Cecil  M. Group on
September 17, 1936, in Syracuse, NY.

She was a graduate of Baldwinsville Academy, class of 1954.

In 1958, Carole move to Phoenix with her late husband, Willard C. “Spike” Sponable.

Since 1973, she was the owner /operator of Carole G. Sponable Accounting.

Carole was a member of Pennellville United Methodist Church; a former member of Phoenix United Methodist Church;  a village of Phoenix trustee in 1989; the mayor of of the village of Phoenix from 1990-1994; lifetime member of the Ladies Auxiliary Enterprise Fire Co. # 1, Phoenix; the chairwoman of the Community Youth Council; and a major proponent of the annual fireworks program on the Oswego River, as well as a longtime co-coordinator of the Bridge House Brats youth program.

Recently, she was bestowed the honor in an inaugural event by receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016 from the village of Phoenix officials and the Phoenix community.

Carole was also active in the Schroeppel Community Services department in various programs for adults and children.

She served on the Schroeppel Town Council as well.

She was predecease in death by her husband, Willard C. “Spike” Sponable, on November 28, 1973; her son, Danny T. “Puffy” Sponable, on April 1, 2005; her sisters, Barbara Gerhardt and Marcia Boyce.

Surviving are her son, Robert T. (Betsy) Sponable of Tunbridge, Vermont; three daughters, Delaine Virtucio of Columbia, SC, Kim Fields of Plant City, Fla., and Jennifer Sullivan of Virginia Beach, Va.; one sister, Shirley Johnston of Baldwinsville; five grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; several
nieces and nephews; and many friends.

Services will be held on Sunday, June 4, at 2:15 p.m. in the Pennellville United Methodist Church, 389 County Route 54, Pennellville, NY.

The Rev. Jeff Hodge will officiate the service.

A calling hour period will be from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service in the church sanctuary as well.

At 4 p.m., the same day, following the church service, a celebration of life remembrance service for Carole will be held in Henley Park at the Bridge House downtown Phoenix.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Carole’s memory can be made to Francis House, Syracuse; The Bridge House Brats Youth Council; and the Pennellville United Methodist Church.

Burial will be on Monday, June 5, at 10 a.m. in Pine Plains Cemetery, 8686  Henry Clay Blvd., Clay, NY  13041.
