PHOENIX, NY – Eugene Melvin Downing, 90, of Phoenix, NY, passed away at the home of his daughter, Jan, in Central Square, on Friday August 18, 2017.

He was born on August 12, 1927, to his late parents Lelah May (Melvin) and Dana Downing in Ohio.
Gene was a U. S. Navy veteran.
He was a graduate of Clarkson University, class of 1956.
Gene was a civil engineer for the Charles T. Main Co., Boston, Mass.
He was a member of the Pennellville United Methodist Church; a long-time Mason with the Callimachus Lodge # 369 F & AM, Phoenix.
Gene had a strong passion for sailing and a mischievous nature.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Maureen; a brother Donald.
Surviving are his wife of nearly 51 years, Nancy L. (Eckert) Downing; his children and their spouses, Jan (Steve), Valerie, Marla (Matt), Deb (Jack), Fred (Terri), Donna (Barry) and Dan (Robin); 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; his brothers, Alan, Dana (Patricia) and Stanley (Josephine); a sister-in-law, Rochelle; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, August 21, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Pennellville United Methodist Church, 389 County Route 54, Pennellville.
The Masons will conduct a Masonic service just prior to the 1 p.m. funeral service all in the church.
The Rev. Jeff Hodge will officiate.
Burial to follow in Phoenix Rural Cemetery.
