FULTON – Mary Helen Greene, 87, of Fulton, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 14, at Crouse Hospital, surrounded by the love of her family.
Born in Lyons, NY, Mary was the cherished daughter of the late Homer and Margaret Corbett Broadwell. She shared a beautiful life with her devoted husband, Donald Greene, and together they built a family rooted in love and resilience.
Mary spent her early years in Florence, NY, before moving to Oswego, where she attended the Oswego Campus School and Oswego High School. At just 12 years old, her vibrant spirit shone as she became a majorette with the Scriba Fire Department, eventually dazzling as a majorette for the Oswego High School Marching Buccaneers.
Mary’s love for her community was as boundless as her talents. She founded the local chapter of the American Business Women’s Club and proudly served as its first President. She enjoyed Toastmasters, earning numerous accolades. Mary also led the Federated Women’s Garden Club (national), winning ribbons for her beautiful floral arrangements, and was an active member of the Fulton Elks Lodge Women’s Auxiliary.
An exceptional seamstress, Mary’s creativity knew no bounds. She lovingly crafted clothing and quilts, pouring her heart into them. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were wrapped in warmth, both from her quilts and her unwavering love.
Mary brought people together with her annual women’s Christmas parties and her Short Story Writing Club dinners. Her love of life and laughter was evident on the dance floor, where, at 16, she claimed victory in a jitterbug contest in Fulton.
Her entrepreneurial spirit led her to co-own Greene’s Upholstery with her husband Donald, a business they ran for over 30 years, making their mark in the community.
Mary’s pride in her Irish and English heritage was evident in her engaging speeches on genealogy at the Volney Town Hall. She was a keeper of stories, a preserver of history, and a beacon of light for her beloved family.
She is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, Donald Greene, and her devoted daughters, Sharon (Michael) Jordan of Baldwinsville and Linda (Fran Hoefer) Hayes of Oswego and preceded by her loving son, Bryan Greene. She also leaves behind her sisters, Christine Nearbin and Maxine Bush, six adoring grandchildren—Michele (Kevin) Klein, William (Beth) D. Hill III, Ashley (Mike) Henry, Warrant Officer USMC James Hayes (Christi), Craig (Kelly) Jordan, and Corey Jordan—and eight precious great-grandchildren. Mary will also be deeply missed by her nieces, nephews, and all who were lucky enough to know her.
