James A. Boyer

OSWEGO – James A. Boyer, 88, a lifelong resident of Oswego, passed away on September 23, 2026.

Born in Oswego, he was the son of the late Francis and Edith (Haley) Boyer. He graduated from St. John’s School and Oswego High School and received his bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from SUNY Oswego.

James proudly served in the United States Army in the late 1950s. A talented electrician, he worked for Alcan Aluminum for more than 25 years, where he served as a foreman before retiring in 1993. A hardworking and devoted provider, James spent many years working long hours and demanding shifts to support his family and provide his children with opportunities that were important to him.

James was a longtime member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church. His Catholic faith and the education of his children were deeply important to him. He and his wife, Margaret, made Catholic education a priority for their family, sending their children to Catholic schools throughout their grade school and high school years.

Family was at the center of James’s life. When his children were growing up, summers were filled with camping and fishing trips, as well as family day trips to Niagara Falls and area theme parks. These annual outings became cherished family traditions and created memories his children carried with them throughout their lives.

James shared 66 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Margaret “Peg” (Walker) Boyer. Their life together was built around their devotion to one another and to the family they raised together.

Following his retirement, James became governor of the Oswego Moose Lodge. During his tenure, he helped turn around the lodge’s finances and revitalize the club. He was also an avid golfer and reader and a devoted Buffalo Bills fan.

James is survived by his beloved wife, Margaret “Peg” (Walker) Boyer; five children, Kelly (Dennis) Rothwell of Oswego, Yvonne Brown of Oswego, Joseph Boyer of Oswego, John (Barbara) Boyer of Manchester Center, Vermont, and James C. (Kevin) Boyer of Moravia; five grandchildren, Jay B. (Carol) Brown, Brandon Brown, Danielle VanVorst, Justine (Jason) Niver, and Gabriela Boyer; eight great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his son, Robert Boyer.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 3, at 10:00 a.m. at Christ the Good Shepherd. Burial will follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery.

Friends may call at Dowdle Funeral Home on Friday, October 2, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in James’s memory to Trinity Catholic School of Oswego.
