Joan A. Wood

OSWEGO, NY – Joan A. Wood, 77, a resident of 57 E. Oneida St., passed away on Saturday April 2, 2011, at St. Luke Health Services after a long illness.

Born in the Bronx, NY, she was the daughter of the late John F. and Margaret A. (Roark) Esseltine.

Joan was a graduate of St. Paul’s Academy and Oswego High School.

She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Nazareth and received her Masters of Science degree from the Oswego State Teachers College.

Mrs. Wood was an English Teacher for the Mexico Academy and Central School District and also for the Oswego City School District.

She retired from the Oswego High School in 1992.

She was an avid camper and considered Wescott Beach State Park to be a second home.

Mrs. Wood also enjoyed traveling during her retirement years, especially to the Adirondacks and to Florida.

Surviving are her two sons, Robert (Cheryl) Wood Jr. of Williamsville, NY and Jeffrey Wood of Oswego; a daughter, Colleen Peck of Orlando, Fla.; and two granddaughters, Mellisa (Eric) Schillinger of Rochester and Stephanie (Joshua) Keim of Buffalo.

Mrs. Wood was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Robert Wood, in 2008.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 10 a.m. from St. Paul’s Church.

Burial will be in St. Paul’s Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Dowdle Funeral Home on Wednesday from 4-7 p.m.
