It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Penny (Pietje) Sheridan on January 29, 2025, at the age of 93. Born in the Netherlands on March 9, 1931, Penny was the daughter of the late Haye and Rigtje (Minnema) Bosma and beloved stepfather Roelof Weistra. It was here that Penny’s early experiences during World War II instilled in her a deep sense of gratitude for even the smallest thing, and an indomitable spirit. She came to the U.S. at the age of 21 and was extremely proud to become an American citizen.

Penny was a dedicated employee of Oswego Hospital for 22 years. During her time, she consistently demonstrated her commitment and expertise, ultimately rising to the position of Housekeeping Supervisor.
She was known for her delicious meals and was an expert knitter – she could peel a potato or apple in one strand and could knit without even looking at it. Many of her recipes have been passed down and numerous friends and family have handknit socks to remember her by.
Penny was married to Richard “Dick” N. Sheridan for almost 50 years until his passing in 2014. They loved to drive every weekend – North, South, East or West on a whim – enjoying new adventures of scenery and eating in new places. They also enjoyed many summers at Dowie Dale Campground and later in life, Scriba Senior bus trips.
At age 88, Penny was diagnosed with dementia but was exceptionally taken care of at home by her daughter Ria and son-in-law Tim who lived next door, so she could live out her days at home watching the birds and enjoying her tulips grow.
Penny was the kindest, most compassionate, selfless woman; always putting others before herself. May she rest in peace, she will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
In addition to her husband, Penny was predeceased by her four brothers: Marten, Siebe, Dirk, and Tjeerd, all of the Netherlands. She is survived by her brother Jan (Saapke) Weistra, nephews Roland and Tjitte and families, her devoted daughter Ria (Tim) May, son Peter (Patti) Alkema of Florida, and stepson Richard (Cheryl) Sheridan, Jr.
She loved all of her grandchildren and great grandchildren: Tara (Jon) Shaw of California, Peter Jr., and Gage of Florida, and local family: Ricky and his daughter Aliviah, Brandon, Erin and her daughter Scarlett, Sean (Angela) and children Brayden and Ayla, and Sarah and her daughter Zuri.
Family services will be private and at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Arrangements are in the care of the Dowdle Funeral Home
