FULTON, NY – Walter F. Howard Jr., 63, of the town of Volney, entered into his Savior’s arms on Saturday, September 21, 2013, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Fulton to the late Walter F. and Velma Coles Howard Sr., Mr. Howard is survived by his wife of 43 years, the former Dolores “DeeDee” Hayden; children, Walter III (Laurie), Greg, Adam (Joanne Chesbro) and Sherry (Jonah Hawn); grandchildren, Kendra, Morgan, Brayden, Landen, Bryanna, Lydia and a grandchild to be born early next year.

Mr. Howard is also survived by a twin brother, Wendell; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Walter was a 1968 graduate of G. Ray Bodley High School and a 1968 graduate of the Auto Technician program at BOCES/Mexico.

That year Walter and his team from Oswego County was the first runner-up in the New York State Plymouth Troubleshooting Contest in Albany.

Walter was a skilled mechanic for 13 years at Howard’s Sunoco in Fulton; employed at Electro-Flyte Fulton/East Syracuse and retired in 2010 From Novelis in Scriba.

Walter enjoyed family gatherings, working on his farm, county fairs, tinkering on his 1968 Chevy El Camino, classic car shows, parades and especially being around his grandchildren.

Walter was an avid fan of auto racing, having attended the Oswego Speedway since 1958.

In the early 1970s, he was on the pit crew of the Hagen Howard Chevy #40 at the Oswego Speedway with such drivers as Norm Mackereth, Jim Cheney, Baldy Baker and Brian Herb.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, September 28, at Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church, 2819 County Route 45, Fulton.

Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

Calling hours will be 2 to 7 p.m. Friday at Foster Funeral Home, 910 Fay St., Fulton.
