Adeline “Addi” Merenda Burns

OSWEGO – Adeline “Addi” Merenda Burns, 92, passed away on July 28, 2025.

Addi was born and raised in Oswego, New York, the daughter of Albert and Carmelina Merenda, originally from Italy and Sicily, respectively. She spent her career as a dedicated elementary school teacher, serving over 33 years with the Half Hollow Hills Public Schools on Long Island, NY. Addi was adored and deeply respected by her students and colleagues alike. Her lasting impact is felt through the many lives she inspired to pursue careers in education.

 

In her later years, Addi moved to Virginia Beach to be near her devoted nephew, John Merenda, and his wife Rosie, whose loving care and companionship brought her great joy.

 

Addi was predeceased by her beloved husband of 63 years, Richard Burns; her sister Lena Oswald (Kent); and her brother Joseph Merenda (Marie). She is survived by her sisters Yolanda Curran, Julianna Wells (Roger), Maria Davies, and Roberta “Bobbi” Merenda (Ed Courtney); her brother John Merenda (Joanne); her godchildren John Merenda and Marly Merenda Franke; and many loving nieces and nephews.

 

A Memorial Service will be held at Nelson Funeral Home located at 11 W. Albany Street, Oswego, NY on Monday September 15th at 12 Noon followed by a service at St. Peter’s cemetery. Arrangements are under the caring guidance of Nelson Funeral Home.
