Anthony Joseph “AJ” Gambino

OSWEGO – Anthony Joseph “AJ” Gambino of Oswego, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on May 26, 2025, at the age of 85. Born in Islip, NY, he was the son of the late Anthony I. and Margaret (Mahar) Gambino.

 AJ graduated with a bachelor’s degree from SUNY Albany in 1963, and then worked as a Chemist at Sterling Winthrop Research Institute. In 1966, he enlisted into the Navy and served on the USS Sanctuary (AH-17), a hospital ship, during the Vietnam War. After his service, he returned to Sterling Winthrop and later taught at the La Salle School for Boys in Albany until his retirement. He loved his work and was a well-respected teacher, greatly admired by many of his students. AJ was also an avid historian and researcher. His love of history led him to write his book, “By the Shores of New Baltimore” which detailed the rich maritime history of New Baltimore’s regional shipping industry along the bank of the Hudson where he and his family lived for 38 years. He also enjoyed photography, hiking with his family, playing chess, and collecting antique bottles and crocks.

 

AJ is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Molly (Hamm) Gambino, children Cynthia (Matthew) Trani, and Peter (Melynda) Gambino, and grandchildren Ethan Stevens, Abigayle Trani, and Madelyn, Marianna, and Michaela Gambino. He also leaves behind many loved nieces.

A committal service will be held at 10 am on Monday, June 2, 2025, at the Gerald B.H. Soloman Saratoga National Cemetery, with Rev. Dr. David Corlett presiding. Military Honors will be rendered by members of the US Navy. A celebration of life will be held at 1 pm at Unionville Reformed Church, 1134 Delaware Turnpike, Delmar NY 12054. All are welcome to attend either or both services. Arrangements are under the caring guidance of Nelson Funeral Home.
