OSWEGO – Anthony M. Benigno, 68, of Oswego, New York, passed away on July 11, 2025, in Oswego with his family by his side. Born on August 29, 1956, in New York, Anthony was known for his kindness, which touched everyone he met. He will be deeply missed by his children and former wife, sisters, cousins, nieces, nephews, work colleagues, and many friends he made over the years.
Raised on Long Island, Anthony developed a lifelong passion for sports. He loved watching the New York Giants and Syracuse Orange basketball, cheering passionately for his teams, and excelled at playing racket sports as well as golf and cycling. He graduated from Union College and earned his law degree from Syracuse University. Anthony had a long, successful legal career, predominantly as a prosecutor. First for Greene County, New York, in his early years. He also had a private practice serving clients in Green County. Later, he worked for the New York State Department of Health as a prosecutor before becoming a Program Manager for the Office of Professional Medical Conduct. He had dedicated much of his career to public service, most recently working as a prosecuting attorney for the New York State Department of Health, Office of Professional Medical Conduct, where his commitment to justice made a lasting impact. Above all, Anthony prioritized his children, Alexander, Emilie, and Danielle, over himself, pouring his heart into their happiness and well-being. He was known for his legendary homemade pizza, a favorite of his kids. He made holidays special with his warmth, creating cherished family traditions. He took pride in teaching his younger cousin and sister skills like driving a stick shift and swinging a golf club. Anthony loved eating and cooking, a good glass of scotch, funny jokes, movies (especially slapstick humor), dogs and cats, being outside, and having a good party. He was kind, friendly, and respected within his professional community and among friends.
He leaves behind three children who meant the world to him and were his pride and joy: Alexander from Buffalo, Emilie (Jordan) from Halifax, and Danielle (James) of Oswego, as well as his sisters, Lisa Newmark (Stephen; Douglas and Lauren) and Amy Fothergill (Alan; Santo and Kate), and his former wife, Gisele Benigno. He was predeceased by his parents, Sandy and Louise Benigno.
Anthony’s legacy of kindness, humor, selflessness, and devotion to family and sports will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. A Celebration of Life will be planned at a later date. Arrangements are under the caring guidance of Nelson Funeral Home.
