OSWEGO – Barbara J. Burritt, 95, of Oswego, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2025.
Born on July 4, 1929, she was the daughter of Andrew and Sarah (Engles) Michaud.
Barbara’s grandfather and father were immigrants from Switzerland. They came to the United States in 1907 to start the Nestlé chocolate company in Fulton, New York. It was the first Nestlé plant in the United States. She was born and raised in Fulton, graduated from high school, and married Richard M. Burritt in 1949. They were married for 61 years and raised three children.
Barbara’s first job was for the Nestlé chocolate company. Her lifelong hobbies included horseback riding (she owned three horses), knitting and crocheting, breeding poodles and Chihuahuas, and scrapbooking her family history. She was an extraordinary homemaker, cook and baker, and a loving wife and mother. She led an active life and was a tireless worker for whatever task she had in front of her. Barbara adored her family and enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Her children, Chris (Brenda) Burritt, Sharon (Robert) Day, and Michelle (James) Higgins, survive. She also leaves behind 12 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren, whom she loved spending time with.
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Burritt, her brother, Donald Michaud, and her grandson, Robert Day III.
Services will be held at 10 am on Saturday, June 7, 2025, in Riverside Cemetery, where Rev. Bill King will preside.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Barbara’s name to Seneca Hill Manor, 20 Manor Drive, Oswego, NY. Arrangements are under the caring guidance of Nelson Funeral Home.
