OSWEGO – Dr. Joseph Edmund Mather, 95, of Oswego, NY passed away at home on April 11 with his wife by his side. Dr. Mather was preceded in death by his parents Joseph A. and Elizabeth Mather, his wife Mary Jane (Fayette), his brother Raymond Mather, his son Dr. Joseph Edward Mather, and his partner Barbara Nellis.
Born in Valley Stream, Dr. Mather attended St. John’s University (Magna Cum Laude),
completed medical school at the State University of New York at Syracuse (Magna Cum
Laude), and completed his internship and residency at Nassau County Medical Center. He was a Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, stationed at Womack Army Hospital in Fort Bragg, North Carolina from 1959 to 1961. In 1961, Dr. Mather and his family moved to Oswego as he joined two colleagues to found Oswego County OB-GYN where he would provide care to the women of Oswego County until his retirement in 2013. In addition to his work at Oswego County OB-GYN, Dr. Mather was an associate professor at SUNY Upstate and served others in many leadership capacities, including Department Chief of OB/GYN at Oswego Hospital, Past President of the Oswego County Medical Society, Past Chairman of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) District II Section 5, and a member of the Oswego County Board of Public Health. He was also certified by the National Board for Hypnotherapy and Anesthesiology as a medical hypnotherapist and a hypnotic anesthesiologist. Dr. Mather loved to travel, sail, spend time with his family, play golf, spend time in St. Croix, USVI and was a previous member of Fair Haven Yacht Club and a Life Member of the Oswego Yacht Club.
Dr. Mather is survived by his wife Marge (DiBlasi) Mather, his children Christopher (Mary Louise) Mather, Patrick (Lois) Mather, Timothy (Deborah) Mather, Daniel (Cynthia) Mather, Katherine (Michael) Herrmann, and daughter-in-law Victoria Mather, grandchildren Dr. Joseph A. (Michelle) Mather, Caroline (Jason) Latiolais, William (Sofia) Mather Alvarado, Thomas (Emily) Mather, Elizabeth (Jonathan) Leivo, Jeffrey (Abigail) Mather, James (Dr. Puja) Mehta-Mather, Ellen Mather, Sarah (Daniel) Kozlowski, Danielle (Jonathan) Stull, Alexander (Avonlea) Herrmann, Olivia Herrmann, 14 great- grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, April 15, 2024, at 11:00 am at St. Mary of the Assumption Parish and Shrine in Oswego. Burial will be held at St. Peter Cemetery. Arrangements are under the caring guidance of Nelson Funeral Home. Donations may be made to Oswego Health Foundation in Dr. Mather’s memory.
