Harold (Hal) E. Butler

OSWEGO – Harold (Hal) E. Butler of Oswego Town died on August 24th, 2026. He was 98 years old. Born July 3rd, 1928, he was the son of the late George and Rose Butler. He was the youngest of 13 children.

After graduating from Oswego High School in 1946, he worked as a night auditor at the Hotel Pontiac and then in the office at Taggert-St. Regis. He served 4 years in the US Army from 1948 to 1952 during the Korean conflict. He graduated from Army Finance School and was stationed at 1st Army Headquarters on Governors Island off the tip of Manhattan.

After serving in the Army, he worked 14 years in the office of Armstrong Cork in Fulton, NY, then 25 years as Treasurer for the Oswego City School District. He attended Rutgers University and Syracuse University.

Hal constantly had a book in his hands. He enjoyed horse racing and his camp in the Boylston area with his buddy Uncle Fred Clayton. They visited Barnes Corners Hotel often.

He was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection, serving on many commissions and the vestry.

He was predeceased by his wife of nearly 67 years, Joan Deary Butler, as well as his four sisters and eight brothers.

He is survived by his three children, David (Pamela), Brad, and Ellen, his seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He loved them all.

There will be no calling hours. A Funeral Service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection, 120 West 5th Street, Oswego.

A private burial at the Oswego Town Rural Cemetery will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers or cards, a donation may be made to the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection in Oswego. Arrangements are under the caring guidance of Nelson Funeral Home.
