OSWEGO – Johanna Van Geet, 96, of Oswego, passed away peacefully on June 27, 2025, with her family by her side.
Born in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, she was the daughter of the late Anthony and Jannetje Nelltije (MaasKant) Everts. She studied and became a nurse while living there.
After marrying Anthony (Tony) in 1956, they immigrated to the United States first settling in Cincinnati, OH. During their 46-year marriage, they raised 3 children while relocating from Los Angelos, CA, Boston, MA, Buffalo, NY, Rochester, MI to ultimately settling in Oswego, NY.
While in Oswego, Tony was a professor of Chemistry at SUNY Oswego while Johanna worked in the Operating Room at Oswego Hospital until her retirement. She was revered as a skilled OR nurse and was often requested to assist in the most difficult surgeries.
Johanna loved nature, the outdoors and fitness and spent whatever time was allowed in her busy family and work schedule to take walks as she enjoyed the sun on her face and her senses filled with nature. These walks were often with her children in tow to whom she passed on this joy. She was an active member of the Oswego YMCA fitness and aqua classes for many years.
Her children and grandchildren were the focus and joy of her life, birthdays and Christmas gifts were never missed and accomplishments were enthusiastically acknowledged. They all adored her and were dedicated to her in her often-bumpy last few years.
There were many happy trips back to The Netherlands to visit family and friends and likewise, Dutch relatives were lovingly hosted for their annual visits to the States.
All that knew Johanna knew that she was tough as nails and a survivor. She and her siblings grew up during the German occupation of Holland during WWII. Persistent with overcoming adversity and injuries, our cousin in The Netherlands often mentioned that “She is the oldest Everts on record!”
Johanna is survived by her loving children: Otto (Kelly) Van Geet of CO, Corina (Andy) Hughes of CT and Paul (Sherri) Van Geet of NY. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Eric and Anna Van Geet and Callahan and Casidhe Hughes.
In addition to her husband, Dr. Anthony Van Geet, Johanna is predeceased by her parents and three siblings in The Netherlands.
She will be greatly missed by her entire family and friends.
