John Cook

OSWEGO – John Cook, 69, a lifelong resident of Oswego, New York, passed away on April 28, 2024, at his home in Parrish, Florida, where he has lived with his wife, Carol, for the past 7 years.

John was a 1972 graduate of Oswego Catholic High School.  He worked for Niagara Mohawk/National Grid for 35 years. In the first half of his career, John worked as a Radiation Protection Technician at the Nine Mile 1 and 2 Nuclear Plants before transferring to positions at the Oswego Steam Station and the Hydro Plant in Fulton. John finished his career at Volney Center, working as an Electrical Planner. After retirement he was employed by Bartlett Nuclear as a contractor, traveling to many Nuclear Plants in New York and the Northeast to work the shutdowns.

While working for National Grid, John took many classes and courses to further his working knowledge, including the completion of an Electrical Apprenticeship Program at Oswego’s local IBEW.

John was a dedicated, lifelong, and often frustrated Detroit Lions fan, finally finding a bit of joy in their success this past season.

With his cousin, Tony Osetek, John bought a Supermodified Race Car. John drove the “00” during the 1977 racing season at the Oswego Speedway, after which he enjoyed being a part of the Osetek/Gosek 00 Racing Team as a member of the crew.

He was a dedicated family man, taking his family on many excursions, including camping trips, and cruises. John, or as they knew him “Bompi”, doted on his beloved granddaughters, taking them on extended Disney World stays. He had a great deal of fun spoiling his girls, especially with secret spontaneous lunch trips.

John was preceded in death by his mother Helen Lupa Cook, his father, William Cook Sr., his stepmother Honorine Cook, and a stepsister Helen Carroll.

John is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Carol, as well as his sons Matthew (Paige) Cook of St. Petersburg, Florida, James (Lindsay) Cook of Boothbay, Maine, his cherished granddaughters Mayla and Teagan Cook, as well as his siblings William Cook Jr. of Oswego, Cynthia (Robert) Urquhart of Oswego, and Susan (William) McClelland of Parrish, Florida.
