John H. Taylor

OSWEGO, NY – John H. Taylor, 89, of Oswego, passed on July 8, 2023. Born in Adams, he was the son of the late Harrison and Margaret (Denny) Taylor.

John was a veteran having served in the US Army as a Paratrooper.

He was a proud owner and operator, along with his wife and family, of Woody’s service station, convenience store, and restaurant in Scriba.

John was a member of The Elks Club for more than 50 years, a member of the Shriners, and also a member of the Oswego Masonic Lodge, Lake City Lodge #127. He was an avid bowler and a Bowling Hall of Fame Member in both Oswego and Fulton. He also worked as a manager of the Oswego Pinarama for a number of years. After retirement, John enjoyed golfing and loved drinking coffee and hanging out with his friends at Mcdonald’s.

John is survived by his loving son Brian (Donna DuBois) Taylor of Scriba, his sister Nat Palmer of Minetto, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 years Dorothy (Woodland) Taylor, his son Barry Taylor, and two sisters Shirley Merritt and Norrita Bullard.

Family and friends are invited to call on Friday, July 14, 2023, from 4-6 p.m. at Nelson Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 6 p.m. with Rev. Colon Wright. John’s burial is being planned for a later date in North Scriba Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in John’s name to the Friends of Oswego County Hospice at PO Box 102 Oswego NY 13126.

Arrangements are under the caring guidance of Nelson Funeral Home.
