Joyce A. Freitag, 74, of Cortland, NY, with the utmost confidence in Jesus Himself, ran into the arms of her heavenly Father, bathed in love and made whole again on February 23, 2026. She deeply embodied her faith and departed without fear, reuniting with her parents, Reinhardt “Ike” and Dorothy Ellis Eichenauer.
Joyce was born on October 23, 1951, in Rockville Centre, NY. She was a 1969 graduate of Homer High School and a 1973 graduate of Stony Brook University. Her greatest accomplishment was the fierce love and loyalty she had for her family and those she called her friends. Her zeal for life was seen in her many travels, where she found beauty and meaning in culture and adventures that brought her to beautiful places, the lavender fields of Provence being among her favorites.
Joyce lovingly moved from her 1840’s farmhouse in Canton, NY, to join her sister, Diane Irwin as a partner in the Cracker Barrel Antiques business, which they ran together for many years.
Joyce is survived by her sister, Diane Irwin of Cortland, her niece, Kelly (Matt) Spagnola of Oswego, and her daily walking companion and sweet dog, Bailey.
The family would like to thank Dr. Malakar and his staff for their compassionate care.
Anyone wishing to make a memorial contribution in Joyce’s name is asked to consider Servant’s Heart North Ministry, c/o Elim Grace Church, located at 340 West 1st St., Oswego, NY, 13126. Please include “Joyce Freitag Donation” in the memo.
A celebration of life for Joyce will be held privately at a later date. Arrangements are under the caring guidance of Nelson Funeral Home.
