Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Michael “Mike” Lupa, 80, passed away peacefully on September 15, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of dedicated service to his country, a distinguished engineering career, and deep devotion to his family and faith.

Born on January 8, 1946, in Oswego, New York, Mike was the son of the late Joseph V. and Helen Lupa (née Koleczek).

While earning a degree in aeronautical engineering from the University of Detroit, he embarked on what became a proud 40-year military career. He served seven years on active duty from 1968 to 1975, achieving the rank of Captain, and continued in the U.S. Army Reserves until 2006, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. A talented professional, Mike spent his career working as an aeronautical, mechanical, and nuclear engineer with Raytheon, Sealright, Niagara Mohawk, and Constellation Energy.  An avid collector and lifelong reader, Mike possessed an unquenchable curiosity and a passion for acquiring knowledge. Mike was a devoted family man who traveled the world before settling his family back in Oswego.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Zofia (née Tobiasz); his sons, Michal and Jacek; his daughters-in-law, Lisa (née Shampnois) and Alyson (née Becker); and his cherished grandchildren, Magdalena, Mikai, Lech, and Petra.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, September 25 from 4-6 PM at Nelson Funeral Home in Oswego, NY. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 AM on Saturday, September 26th at the Church of the Sacred Heart & St. Mary, Our Lady of Czestochowa in NY Mills, NY, where his late uncle, Monsignor Peter J. Koleczek served as pastor for many years. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to local libraries or veterans organizations of your choice. Arrangements are under the caring guidance of Nelson Funeral Home.
