Myrtle “Vickie” Fleischman

OSWEGO – March 26, 1930 – January 11, 2025

Myrtle Vickie” Fleischman, age 94, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 11, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.

Born on March 26, 1930, in Oswego, NY, Vickie was the daughter of the late Vernon and Myrtle (Josh) Vickery. She graduated from Oswego High School in 1948 and proudly served her country as a veteran of the U.S. Navy. As a W.A.V.E. (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service), she served as a storekeeper third class from 1951 to 1955. Vickie was a charter member of the Women in Military Service of America (WIMSA) in Arlington, VA, and a member of the American Legion Post 268 and VFW Post 5885 in Oswego.

After her discharge from the U.S. Naval Air Station in Alameda, CA, Vickie remained in Alameda, working in Oakland as a switchboard operator and receptionist for the United Bay Area Crusade (United Fund) for 14 years. During this time, she formed many lasting friendships. She later returned to the Alameda Naval Base as a civil service employee before eventually coming back to her hometown of Oswego, NY.

Vickie was predeceased by her parents; her beloved husband, Robert H. Fleischman, who passed in 2010; two brothers, Ray and Jack Vickery; a sister, Betty Bumpus; and a stepdaughter, Jeanene Fleischman.

She is survived by her loving stepchildren, Ann Santoro of Wetumpka, AL, Rick (Judy) Fleischman of Oswego, and Sherry (Mike) Palmitesso of Oswego. She also leaves behind several cherished nieces and nephews, including Sandy (Danny) Mosher and Gary Kuno, as well as her step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be held at Nelson Funeral Home on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, from 4:00-6:00 PM. Graveside Services and Military Honors will be rendered in the Spring at the Oswego Town Rural Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Oswego County Humane Society, 17 Mitchell St., Oswego, NY. Arrangements are under the  caring guidance of Nelson Funeral Home.
