Carmen Mercedes Lugar, 102

PHOENIX, NY – Carmen Mercedes Lugar, 102, of Phoenix, NY, passed away on Saturday October 27, 2012, with her daughters and granddaughters by her side every step of the way.

Carmen loved and was loved.

She was always gracious, kind and caring.

She imparted a strong sense of family values and traditions that will flow down through the generations.

She was born to her late parents, Elvira Colon (Jimenez) and Jose Mercedes
Colon on May 1, 1910, in Barros, Puerto Rico.

Her mother, Elvira, passed away when Carmen was only 11 years of age.

Carmen attended the University of Puerto Rico.

While employed by an engineering firm in Puerto Rico, she met her future husband, John Peter Lugar, an engineer in the US Army.

They married on March 15, 1942, and resided in Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Michigan, finally settled into a long stay in Syracuse where John was on the executive staff of NPG.

In 1963, Mr. Lugar joined Chrysler International Co.

They resided on Lake Geneva in Switzerland, then onto the countries of England and Mexico.

Carmen had an excellant command of the Spanish language, but was equally fluent in English, French, Swiss and German languages.

This skill  was beneficial to her and her husband.

She was predeceased by her husband of 46 years, John P. Lugar in 1988; her son, Peter Joseph Lugar in 1974; also predeceased by her siblings, Calinda Colon, Emma (Sebastian) Colon, Esther (Jose Adolofo) Balseiro, Nando (Bilda) Colon, Pepe (Maria Delores) Colon; and her step-mother, whom she also loved very much, Marie Angeles (Jose) Colon.

Surviving to cherish her memory are her daughter and son-in-law, Vera M. and Raymond Phelps; three grandchildren, Tina Phelps, Corine (Mark) Crisafulli and Raymond (Kristine) Phelps; six great-grandchildren, Douglas Van Denburgh, Kasandra Van Denburgh, Justin (Cindy) Crisafulli, Mark Crisafulli, Kyle Crisafulli and Christoper Phelps; one great-great grandson, Justin James Crisafulli; one brother, Felix (Millie) Colon; several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. in Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 3494 State Route 31, Baldwinsville, NY, with the Rev. John Finnigan officiating the mass.
