Donald William Homik, 79

OSWEGO, NY – Donald William Homik, 79, passed away Thursday March 27, 2014, in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, of complications related to Parkinson’s Disease.

He was born in Auburn on December 31, 1934, of the late Daniel and Martha Homik.

Donald attended Niagara University and Georgetown University School of Dentistry, where he earned his doctorate in dental medicine.

He served as a dental officer in the Army at Fort Hood, Texas.

There he met Carol Jean Stanis of Chicago on a blind date.

They were married August 31, 1963.

They settled in Oswego where Don practiced dentistry for more than 30 years.

He was a member of the Oswego County Dental Association.

Together they raised three adventurous sons: Timothy Paul of Ocala, Fla., John Andrew of Denver, Colo. and Kenneth Daniel of Bonners Ferry, Idaho.

Following the passing of his beloved wife in 2008, Donald undertook a bold adventure.

He moved to north Idaho to be near his son Ken, daughter-in-law, Kari Ann and grandchildren, Elliott William, 5, and Estelle Blue, 1.
“Dr. Don,” as he became known, made a strong and lasting impression on all he encountered in his time out west.
He will be remembered as a kind and gentle man to those who came to know him in Idaho, as well as those lifelong friends and family in New York.

In addition to his three sons and two grandchildren, Donald is survived by sisters, Ann Krystyan, Mary Gonza and Janis Stott of Auburn; and brother, John Homik of Syracuse.

A public celebration of life will be held 4-7 p.m., Wednesday at Nelson Funeral, 11 W. Albany St., Oswego.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Oswego, with laying to rest and reception to follow.
