James E. Abel Jr., 89

OSWEGO, NY – James E. Abel Jr., 89, a resident of Oswego, passed away Thursday March 19, 2015, at Rome Memorial Hospital.

Born in Jamestown, NY, on December 3, 1925, he was the son of the late James E. Sr. and Mary Isabelle (Wilson) Abel.

He was an Army veteran serving in Europe from 1944-1946 and an Army Reservist from 1964-1980.

He retired from the United States Army Reserve as a full colonel.

He was a 1944 graduate of Jamestown High School.

In 1958, he graduated from Faxton School of Nursing in Utica.

He was a graduate of the United States Command and General Staff College.

Jim worked at the Utica Psychiatric Center for 21 years until his retirement in 1980.

He enjoyed golfing, bowling, music and played trombone in several bands.

He had a love for animals, especially dogs.

Surviving are his daughter, Holly Abel of Oswego; Dora Thurlow of Oswego; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, June Evelyn (Strand) Abel; and two sisters, Ruth Ann Waidler and Mary O’Connor.

There are no calling hours.
