James E. Backus Sr, 76

OSWEGO, NY – James E. Backus Sr., 76, a resident of State Route 104 in the Town of Hannibal, passed away Wednesday Oct. 3, 2012, at the Andrew Michaud Nursing Home in Fulton.

Mr. Backus was born in Oswego, the son of the late William and Edna (Lowry) Backus.

He was a life resident of Oswego County.

He was the husband of the late Donna (Groat) Backus, who died in 2004.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed as an equipment operator for the city of Oswego.

He had previously worked for the Hammermill Paper Corp. in Oswego.

Mr. Backus loved bowling, golfing, and fishing.

He is survived by two daughters, Denise (Richard) Reynolds of Fulton and Bonnie (Wayne) Newton of Hannibal; a son, James (Marybeth) Backus Jr. of Maryland; 10 grandchildren, Susan, James, Scott, Alicia, Samantha, Gabriella, Wayne Jr., David, Michael, and Breanna; 13 great-grandchildren, Cassandra, Kyle, Shane, Tyler, Logan, Isaac, Michael, Timothy, Nicholas, Tiffany, Christopher, Jacob and Carter.

Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday, at the Dain-Cullinan Funeral Home.

Burial will be in New Haven Cemetery.

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, at the Dain-Cullinan Funeral Home, 112 E. Second St., Oswego.
