John J. Grasso Sr., 90

OSWEGO, NY – John J. Grasso Sr., 90, of Oswego, passed away Wednesday September 16, 2015, in Seneca Hill Manor.

John was born in Oswego, the son of the late Salvatore and Grace Grasso.

John served in the United States Army during World War II.

He was a prisoner of war in Germany and escaped with two other soldiers on Easter Sunday in 1945, and was honorably discharged later that year.

He was a tile setter by trade working for various companies in Western and Central New York.

Later, he was owner and operator of Grasso Excavating, Oswego.

John was a communicant of St. Joseph’s Church and a member of the Dante Alighieri Lodge.

He is survived by his wife, Concetta “Connie” Parisi  Grasso of Oswego; their children, Jeanette (Randall) Woodland of Oswego, Mary (Gary) Caywood of South Carolina, John Grasso Jr. of Oswego, Paul (Caryn) Grasso of Arizona, Benny Grasso of Oswego and Catherine (Jeffrey) Quinn of Camillus; his sister, Eileen Schulz of Central Square; 16 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by his siblings Santo Grasso, Concetta Donahue and Josephine Donabella.

Funeral services will be Monday 9:30 a.m. from the Sugar & Scanlon Funeral Home and 10 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church.

Burial will be in St Peter’s Cemetery.

Calling hours will be Sunday 2 – 4 p.m. at the funeral home, 147 W. Fourth St., Oswego.
