Loyal G. Simmons Sr., 102, 05/17/2008

OSWEGO, NY – Loyal G. Simmons Sr., 102, a resident of Oswego, passed away May 17, 2008, at Seneca Hill Manor after a short illness.

He was born on February 15, 1906, to the late Walter and Belle (Armstrong) Simmons in Minetto, where he lived most of his life.

Loyal G. Simmons Sr.He worked for Columbia Mills until he retired in 1970.

He then spent his summers at his cottage on Lake Ontario and his winters in Hommassa, Fla., for 15 years.

He also resided at St. Luke’s Apartments where he fished on the Oswego River and at the age of 91 he caught his biggest salmon which weighted 28 pounds.

Loyal was also an avid hunter when at the age of 86 he shot a seven-point buck.

He was a life member of the Minetto Rod and Gun club.

He was predeceased by his wife, Lavina; a daughter, Vivian Truax; and son, Loyal Simmons Jr.; sisters, Vera Bigelow and Leola McCracken; brothers, Walter and Merlin Simmons; and grandson, James Simmons.

He is survived by his son, Charles Simmons Sr. of Oswego; his daughter-in-law, Jan Simmons; two sisters, Dorothy Ditto and Viola Barlow, all of Oswego; ten grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; thirty great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Nelson Funeral Home.

Burial will be in Rural Cemetery, town of Oswego.

Calling hours will be held 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, 11 W. Albany St., Oswego.
