Mary Ellen Lanigan, 96

OSWEGO, NY – Mary Ellen Lanigan, 96, a resident of 159 E. Third St., entered into rest on Sunday, Nov. 29, 2009, at her home surrounded by her family.

Born in Cortland, she was the daughter of the late James and Kirby (Bradford) Tobin.

She was a graduate of Cortland High School and C.C.B.I.

Prior to her marriage, she was an executive secretary at Cortland Trust Bank.

A woman guided by her faith and trust in the Lord, led Mary to be a member of the St. Paul’s Altar-Rosary Society, a catechist and Eucharistic Minister for St. Paul’s as well as the pastoral care programs for the parish.

She was selfless and compassionate caregiver all of her life and served as a role model on how to live a happy life.

Mary was a member of the Young Catholic Mother’s Club and, along with her husband, was one of the founding donors of the Oswego Catholic High School.

She loved music and enjoyed playing the piano.

She is survived by her children, James (Barbara) Lanigan of Manchester, NH, Mary (Richard) Sagneri of Syracuse, Terrence Lanigan of Gilbert Ariz., Charles (Charlotte) Lanigan and Frances (Miller Sherman) Lanigan both of Oswego, Elizabeth (Daniel) Feuerstein of Rochester and Dr. Patrick (Caren) Lanigan of Watertown; two daughters-in-law, Julia (Bartko) Lanigan and Mary Smith Lanigan; 23 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Harold, in 1987; two sons, Thomas, who died in 2006, and H. Joseph, who died in 2001; and her sister, Francis Tobin Hughes, who died in 1960.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. from St. Paul’s Church.

Burial will be in St. Paul’s Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Dowdle Funeral Home on Tuesday from 4-7 p.m.
