Mary L. Dowd, 94, a former resident of 55 W. 5th St., Oswego, passed away, Saturday, November 7th, 2009 at the Manor at Seneca Hill. Born in Oswego, she was the daughter of the late Nezer and Mary (Clancy) Dault.

Mrs. Dowd was the President of Dowd and Harrington Insurance Agency.

Mary was active in many organizations; she was among the first graduates of the American Red Cross Nurses’ Aide class in 1942-1945. She served in Oswego Hospital when there was a shortage of nurses during World War II.

Mary was the Chair of the Oswego County Easter Seal in 1963; served on the Central N.Y. Girl Scout Council; was a member and Past President of Oswego County Board of Realtors. She was named realtor of the year in 1967, she also was listed in Who’s Who of American Women from 1977-1978, Mary was a member and past president of the Heritage Foundation of Oswego; member and Vice President of the H. Lee White Marine Museum Guild; Past president of St. Mary’s Parish Council.

From 1976-1977 and 1980-1985 she was a member and Vice-Chair of the Oswego City Charter Revision Commission and member of the second such commission in 1990, from 1978-1979 she was a member of the Oswego County Government Reorganization Commission, Mary received the Zonta Woman of Achievement Award in 1986; she was a member of the Oswego Hospital Board of Trustees for 25 years and was the Past President from 1953-1955 and 1982-1986 of the Oswego Hospital Auxiliary.

Mary’s most satisfying project was that she was the Co-Chair from 1993-1996 of the St. Mary’s Church Preservation Campaign, where their goal was $450,000 and half way through the three year campaign they had reached $455,232, with 67% of the pledges having been received. In 1995 Mary received the Leadership Oswego County’s Lifetime Leadership Award.

Surviving is one brother, Paul (Mary) Dault of Gramado,Brazil; a niece Marissa Dault of Savannah Georgia; Several grandchildren and great – grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Harold E. Dowd

A mass of Christian burial will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s Church, Oswego.

Burial will be in St. Paul’s Cemetery.

Calling hours will be held 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Nelson Funeral Home, 11 W. Albany St., Oswego.
