Melvin B. Hotaling, 88, of Co. Rt. 57, Phoenix, NY died Thursday July 9, 2009.
Born to his late parents, Clarence and Grace (Carkner) Hotaling in Coeymans, NY. A graduate of Ravena-Coeymans High School, later serving in the U.S. Army, WWII Europe and Africa, as a Sgt., receiving the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.
Mel was a conductor for Penn Central Railroad retiring in 1981. He was a member of the First Congregational Church, UCC; Past Commander of the VFW Post 5540 and its firing squad; First Vice Commander of the American Legion Post 418; Callimachus Masonic Lodge 369 F & M, for 60 years; a charter member of Beaver Meadows Golf Club all in Phoenix; a life member of the Ravena Hose Dept., Ravena, NY; Media Temple Shrine, Watertown, NY, since 1975.
Pre-deceased by his daughter Sandra Chalk in 1984; and his grandson, Samuel Chalk, Jr. in 2008.
Surviving are his wife of 43 years the former Catherine M. Van Epps; his daughers, Linda Wilkinson, Donna Newton, Janet Guilzon, Cheryl Morrison, Debra Betor, Brenda Hotaling-Roth, Barbara Baum, Sheryl Dunn, Carla Jenkins, Donna Rose, Annette Simons; one son Richard Watson; one sister, Velma Armstrong; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; two nephews and cousins.
Services are Monday July 13, at 11 am at the Allanson-Glanville-Tappan Funeral Home, Phoenix. Burial with military honors in Phoenix Rural Cemetery, 126 Chestnut St. Calling hours are Sunday from 1 to 5 pm at the funeral home 431 Main St… Contributions preferred to: American Heart Assoc. or American Diabetes Assoc. in his memory.
