Robert ‘Bert’ Stirling, 87, 07/10/2009

OSWEGO, NY – Robert “Bert” Stirling, 87, a resident of State Route 104 in the Town of Oswego, passed away Friday July 10, 2009, at Oswego Hospital.

Mr. Stirling was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on January 4, 1922, the son of the late William and Annie (Murdoch) Stirling.

He was a veteran of the US Army Air Force in World War II.

He retired from the US Air Force with the rank of Major.

He was a graduate of Danbury, Conn., Teachers College, receiving Bachelor’s of Science degree.

He later earned his Master’s degree from Columbia University.

From 1948 to 1980, he was employed as chairman of the Earth Science Department and Assistant to Vice President for Academic Affairs (Associate Professor), at SUNY-Oswego.

Bert loved to sing, and was a member of several community singing groups and choirs.

He was an avid fisherman and golfer, and was a life member of the Oswego Country Club.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Mary Ann (Glancy) Stirling of Oswego; a daughter, Penny (David) Michels of Connecticut; a son, Rob (Victoria) Stirling of Ohio; a sister, Dorothy (Gene) Melvin of Florida; 2 granddaughters; 4 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Helen; and also by 2 brothers and a sister.

As per his wishes, Bert has donated his body to Upstate Medical University for the advancement of medical education and research.

The family wishes to thank the medical staff at Oswego Hospital, especially the ICU, Dr. Mandanas, Dr. David O’Brien, and Barbara Teifke, our friend and caregiver.

Friends and relatives are invited to an informal reception to share stories and celebrate Bert’s life on July, 13 from 3 to 5 p.m., at the Oswego Country Club.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Salvation Army or to Oswego Hospital.

Arrangements are in care of the Dain-Cullinan Funeral Home, Oswego.
