Offense comes alive in Oswego State softball sweep

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State softball team (6-9, 3-2 SUNYAC) registered a pair of one-run wins over Fredonia to earn an important sweep in the SUNYAC standings on Saturday afternoon.

Dee Apps (Jr., Camillus, N.Y.) drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh of game one, while Sarah Thayer (Sr., Winthrop, N.Y.) notched a strikeout in the final Blue Devil at-bat with the game-tying run on second in the second game for the wins.

The Lakers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first courtesy of runs scored by Katie Bredin (Jr., Oneonta, N.Y.), Sammie Schroeter (Jr., Schenectady, N.Y.) and Brooke Radley (Sr., Pulaksi, N.Y.). A leadoff Maureen Lenehan (So., Syracuse, N.Y.) walk resulted in Oswego State’s fourth run when Bredin delivered an RBI single.

Fredonia bounced back with three runs of its own in the top of the third as Alyssa Morgan sent a single through the right side to drive in two runs and Megan Medina hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Morgan.

With a one-run lead, head coach Casey Price’s squad tallied three more runs in the third, as Alexis Nasca (Fr., Hamburg, N.Y.) sent a solo shot over the fence in left center field to help cause in the circle. Tori Trovato (Fr., Fulton, N.Y.) then produced a two-out, two-RBI single that plated Lenehan and pinch runner Jessie Terrano (Fr., Oneonta, N.Y.) to regain a four-run advantage.

Oswego State threatened in the fourth inning, loading the bases with back-to-back-to-back singles. However, the Blue Devils got out of the jam with a groundball that went home for the force out followed by a pair of Laker strikeouts.

Fredonia’s momentum carried over into the fifth as a two-run Megan Medina homer cut the Blue Devil deficit in half at 7-5. Oswego State got those runs back, though, when Dee Apps swatted a two-out double with the bases loaded to make the score 10-5.

The Blue Devils plated three in the sixth and two in the seventh to tie the game at 10, but Apps came up with another timely hit in the bottom half of the inning as her single scored Bredin from third.

The Lakers pounded out 15 hits in the game, as Apps finished 3-for-4 with four RBI and Bredin went 3-for-4 with one RBI and three runs scored.  Nasca went the distance in the circle, allowing ten runs on eight hits and seven walks. Raela Wiley-Delp suffered the loss after allowing four earned runs in the final 3.1 innings.

In the second game of the twinbill, Oswego State kept its offense rolling with two runs in the first. Izzy Simon tied the game at 2-2 with two-run home run in the top of the fourth, but a Trovato single up the middle with two outs plated Sue Schoff (Sr., Little Falls, N.Y.) and Justine Abramowski (So., Levittown, N.Y.) to put the Lakers back in front.

Nicole Ouellette (Sr., Castleton, N.Y.) led off the bottom of the sixth with a double that resulted in an insurance run for Oswego State that it would need.

Fredonia mounted one last charge in its final at-bat, as Morgan doubled in Anne Wasik and Katie Bartkowiak, who walked and was hit by a pitch, with one out. The next Blue Devil batter flied out to left field before Thayer sealed the win striking out the last Fredonia hitter.

Thayer earned her second win of the season giving up four runs on seven hits, five strikeouts and three walks. Alyssa Brognano recorded the loss giving up five runs on nine hits.

Oswego State travels to Utica on Wednesday to face the Pioneers in a doubleheader starting at 3:30 p.m.
