A Quiet Change Is Taking Place in Oswego County

If you talk with someone at the post office or grocery store you start to notice something new for a change. People are talking a little differently about politics these days. Not louder! Just “closer to the ground.”

You can really sense that shift. Neighbors are showing up at small gatherings…at meet and greets in someone’s barn, a fundraiser tucked into the back room of a diner, a conversation on a front lawn. Folks are opening their doors when someone knocks, willing to listen, and wanting to talk. People who haven’t been involved in years are stepping forward again, offering a little time, a little encouragement, and whatever they can spare.

There’s a feeling of hope in the air . A feeling that candidates are listening and really “get” what it’s like to live and work in Oswego County. The focus is shifting from just someone’s political party to the kind of connection a candidate has with people they hope to represent regardless of their party.

What’s really amazing is how wide this circle is becoming. Republicans, Independents, and Democrats are finding themselves in the same conversations…not about party loyalty, but about honesty, transparency, and the simple hope that local government might put community needs first instead of party lines. “We’ve been at the bottom of the barrel in this county for too long,” remarked a local voter when asked what bothers them most.

Oswego County is showing that meaningful civic engagement doesn’t require party loyalty or big money. It requires people willing to show up, speak plainly, and support candidates who represent the values voters talk about on their porches, in their kitchens, and anywhere people gather.

Something real is taking root here. And it can only be explained by our “gut” feelings and maybe that’s the best feeling to lean into this time around.
