Carolyn Handville: Cancer Services Program Promotes Regular Cancer Screenings

Dear Editor:

Recently you printed a letter from Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay. Mr. Barclay was recognizing October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month and highlighting local resources for those to contact should they have questions.

As the Program Manager of the Cancer Services Program (CSP) of the North Country, I would like to applaud Barclay’s efforts to raise breast cancer awareness and also thank him for making mention of the critical risk factors one must consider when coming up with their individualized prevention plans such as personal and family history.

In collaboration with Assemblyman Barclay, the Cancer Services Program of the North Country would like to promote regular cancer screenings and remind everyone that regular cancer screenings can help find cancer early when treatment may be easier. Now that COVID-19 infection rates are low, it is a good time to talk to your doctor about missed preventive care. Scheduling your annual exams and a mammogram is a good start.

Together, we do recognize that many people have lost their jobs and their health insurance because of the pandemic. This is where the Cancer Services Program can help!

The CSP is funded by the New York State Department of Health and offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to uninsured women age 40 and over. The program also offers free colon cancer screenings to uninsured men and women age 50 and over. If more testing is needed, the CSP will provide those tests too. If breast, cervical, or colon cancer is found, our program will help enroll those eligible in the NYS Medicaid Cancer Treatment Program for full Medicaid coverage during treatment.

The CSP of the North Country serves Oswego, Lewis, Jefferson and St Lawrence Counties. Call the CSP at 855-592-0830 to find out if you’re eligible for the program or to get more information.
