To the editor,

As a volunteer firefighter in Onondaga County, I see firsthand that when EMS and first responders have strong support from our government leaders, we have safer communities. We are on the frontlines for every emergency in your town– car accidents, house fires, medical emergencies, and more. When it comes to receiving adequate state funding though, we are often overlooked.

In 2025, New York State granted $25 million to the Volunteer Fire Infrastructure & Response Equipment (V-FIRE) program to support statewide volunteer fire departments. Compare that to the $1.2 billion film and television tax credits in 2025, and we, the local taxpayer, footed the bill.

This is a clear insight into where many of our politicians’ loyalties lie, and it’s not with those of us who keep them and their constituents safe. Could you imagine if New York State invested even 10 percent of that, $120 million, into our volunteer fire and EMS services? More investment means more trained first responders, better technology and equipment, and a greater ability for us to respond quickly and save lives.

It’s time to elect leaders who will cut wasteful government spending and invest in what matters most. That’s why I am voting for James Corl for New York State’s 50th Senate District. James understands the need to support local volunteer firefighters like myself and invest in our communities, rather than continue down Albany’s path or reckless spending and misplaced priorities. When the safety of our communities is on the line, we can’t afford to wait for change. Albany needs balance and new leadership that puts all of us first, not the special interests.
