Monday’s Briefing: Paterson’s Agenda Stalled

Hot enough for ya? As we swelter, (cheesy transition coming) the folks in Albany are sweating out the last days of the legislative year. It seems they’re trying to avoid breaking a sweat.

Gov. David Paterson’s taking a kinder, gentler approach to politics. (Anything would be kinder or gentler than “Steamroller” Spitzer’s approach was.) It isn’t working. Paterson, a Democrat, gets along just swell with Republican Senate leader Boxin’ Joe Bruno. But Shelley Silver, the Democrat who leads the Assembly? Not so much. Legislators may adjourn for the year — yes, the rest of the year — by the end of the month.

Is Paterson showing strength through compromise, or is he the lamest of lame ducks? Time will t ell, but here’s one sign: NYC Mayor Bloomberg’s thinking about running for Governor. And so may Rudi Giuliani (remember him?).

Paterson, meanwhile, is training for Utica’s Boilermaker road run.

As for Spitzer, expect to see documents from the Troopergate scandal (State Troopers used to ferret out Joe Bruno’s use of state assets to travel). But, as usual in Albany, the whole story will stay hidden.

Apropos of not-very-much:

From the Department of The Economy’s Doing Just Fine, Thanks: School tax payments are falling behind.

The economy’s not so bad, says one Rochester economist.

Got diabetes? You’re far more likely to have a leg amputated if the leg, and you, are black.

Which Francis Powers do I vote for?

The Fun and The Stupid:

Fun: Three Movies and A Wedding.

Stupid: Two teenagers + 5 snakes = …

Stupid, the Sequel: You gotta wonder why they can’t just skip the boxing gloves and go straight to mediation.

And finally:

RIP, Jim McKay, the only sportscaster ever to win the Emmy for news.
