Fulton Red Raider Independence

From Krzysztof Strach

We have in the school district of Fulton, a problem which has been a popular topic among people lately, and I would like to give my thoughts on it and regarding what it means for society as a whole.

In November of 2022, New York State announced to the public schools and the world that all native american represented mascots had to be changed to something else. Failure to COMPLY with this decision decided by New York State would face penalties including withholding of state aid and removal of school officers. Now when this was announced, NOBODY even questioned it. Everyone went “Well I guess we have to change our mascot now” no matter how much they disagreed with it. I say to you, that you are not American. WHERE IS YOUR SENSE OF FREEDOM?! Some people, from a far away land, dictate to you what you can do where you live and you just accept it?! WHERE IS YOUR SENSE OF INDEPENDENCE?! Now I know the arguments against even bringing this up. “If they withhold state aid, the whole district will collapse”. And if the district collapses, people not only lose their jobs, but they lose their retirement, benefits, etc. Well honestly, if you are allowing something such as this to happen, the district should collapse. The school officers should be removed. Are you teaching no sense of independence to our children?! What would have happened if the founding fathers just accepted whatever the king dictated to them? THERE WOULD BE NO FOUNDING FATHERS! The country in its present state would not exist! It would have continued to be a British colony and the names of the founding fathers would never be remembered in history. Yes, by disobeying NYS people lose thousands of dollars and jobs and lives are changed. DID THE FOUNDING FATHERS NOT LOSE MONEY AND JOBS TO PURSUE INDEPENDENCE?! These are the same founding fathers that we look up to today, and yet they gave up so much. Their lives would have been so much easier if they remained loyal to the British, worked their jobs, made their money, and lived out their lives. But they would always have doubts in their mind. “What if we did stand up to the crown just that one time?” I thought rebellion and independence were core tenets of the people that call themselves American. But if these Americans can’t even stand up for a mascot for their hometown school, who is beloved and paid all the proper respects necessary to insure that the mascot was used in the correct way, then they are not Americans. You would be loyalists in 1776. If you feel that NYS is in the right to determine a symbol of identity to Fulton, then you are not a Fultonian. If you can not stand up to something you so vehemently disagree with, simply because of money, then you deserve to lose your job. The district deserves to collapse.
