I don’t know about you, but I am sick and tired of the typical GOP response that “Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family and friends” as a result of yet another mass shooting. Is that the best we can do to protect Americans especially our school aged children from gun inflicted crimes? Another school shooting at Apalachee HS in Georgia and VP Candidate JD Vance responded that “school shootings are a fact of life.” I can’t accept that and it is time for sensible gun control laws like background checks, red flag laws and bans on automatic style assault weapons.
Currently, under the Biden -Harris Administration – gun violence is down by 14% in the first six months of 2024 – most likely due to the passing of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act in 2022 -requiring gun sellers to become licensed dealers and expanding background checks. Prior to this legislation – The Federal Assault Weapons Ban in effect from 1994-2004 was the most comprehensive gun control legislation to date and according to researchers if that ban had been in effect from 2005-2019 – 30 mass shootings could have been prevented resulting in 1,478 people being shot, killed and/or wounded.
If Trump is elected for another term – the GOP’s project agenda 2025 will increase gun violence by invalidating state legislative laws on concealed carry, making it far easier for anyone to carry firearms in public. More guns equals more gun related deaths. No one needs to own a military automatic assault weapon – they are solely designed to fire more bullets far faster than manual action handguns and rifles thus increasing the potential for more mass casualties.
Enough is enough – it’s time to work together to make Americans safer by enacting sensible gun control laws and banning assault weapons. I plan to vote blue in November – up and down the ballot and I hope you will join me.
