The recent OP-ED from Assemblyman Barclay was disappointing but not unexpected. As a nurse who has lost patients in all kinds of settings I can tell you that many of my patients had little choice in how they would die, and that was painful in ways medication could not fix.
No one thinks that anyone should arbitrarily end their life, but they should be able to choose dignity over pain and suffering at the end of their life.
The “Medical Aid in Dying Act” allows people to make a difficult choice, but there are plenty of guardrails built in to keep someone from just signing up and ending their life.
It appears Assemblyman Barclay is that type of MAGA Republican that wants to extend life, but then not want to ensure care is there for people. He appears to want to dictate how people live without any concern about how they feel about it, or how they pay for it.
I didn’t hear anything from him regarding loss of ACA credits for people’s healthcare, or any solutions for people going hungry when SNAP was cut off by the administration.
I also haven’t seen him sponsoring any legislation addressing any of the issues he complained the democrats did not do.
I guess people only matter to him when someone from his party tells him he should care.
We need better from our assemblyman.
Thank you
