Safety for All Children

Dear Editor,

Under the Trump administration there has been an uproar within our communities. ICE has been disrupting the lives of immigrants and legal citizens in the name of “immigration enforcement”. There has been an increase in ICE shooting incidents and wrongful detainment. A story about 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos from Columbia Heights Minnesota had made its way through the headlines at the start of the year. Liam was used as bait to lure other family members out of their home and then was arrested (Golden, 2026). This is just one outrageous story. In the last year ICE has doubled the number of children they have arrested.

Under the current Trump administration ICE has arrested more than 8,500 children (The Marshall Project, 2026). Parents or families of these children have difficulty finding them once they have been arrested. Many of these children and families have been in the United States for years, going through the legal process. Children have become the target of the “immigration enforcement” currently happening. Vulnerable, innocent children that are just trying to go to school and have a safe childhood are being arrested.

Where do we draw the line?
