The Christian church has gone silent

Dear Editor,
The Christian church is silent at a time when clear and present human forces are molding the social world in morally indefensible ways. The church fancies itself as the moral leader of the world, but can’t think of anything to say or do about the overthrow of rule of law, climate change, war in Europe and the Middle East, the consolidation of communism across the globe, crime and gun violence, hyper materialism, a wealthy class who want all political power for themselves, excessive consumer interest rates, sports gambling, the decline of science and civics, to name but a few.
The church scurries about like a mouse looking for food at night and then retreats into the walls to hide from the light of day. The most the church can think to do is provide a meal for the homeless, a gift for disaster victims, a lecture about honesty, and an almost exclusive focus on the afterlife. Did Jesus truly teach that salvation comes by means of stone and timber, fancy vestments, and ignoring current events?
