OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State men’s soccer team scored two goals in the final eight minutes for a 3-2 win over Alfred University in the championship game of the Oswego State Men’s Soccer Tournament on Saturday at Lake Field.
Tournament MVP freshman Brandon Comden (Holley, NY) scored the game winning goal with 4:37 left in the game off an assist from sophomore Mike Naab (Ontario, NY). Nabb also set-up sophomore Andrew McBride (Syracuse, NY) for the tying goal just three minutes earlier. Naab was also named to the all-tournament team for his efforts.
The two teams battled two a 1-1 tie in the first half with the Lakers striking first. Sam Moores(Honeoye, NY) finished off a perfect cross from Comden for the 1-0 lead 15 minutes into the game.
Alfred tied the game with six minutes left in the half on a goal by Brendan Collins and took a 2-1 lead when Connor Petrauskas headed in a goal early in the second half.
Oswego was called offsides nine times in the game, spoiling a number of good runs, but not when they needed it most.
With 7:32 left on the clock, Naab sent a pass from the baseline in front of the net to McBride, who headed the ball back to the ground and into the corner of the net to tie the game.
Three minutes later, Naab made a run at the keeper, but a mis-played ball by the Alfred keeper gave Comdon a one-on-one look that he sent over the keeper’s head and just under the bar for the game-winning goal.
Oswego State finished with just four shots on goal in the game, while Laker goalkeeper juniorP.J. Goodwin (Baldwinsville) had to make four saves to earn his second win in as many days.
The win not only avenged a loss to the Saxons from last year’s tournament championship game, but it also gives the Lakers their first 2-0 start since they beat Cazenovia and Keuka to open the 2001 season, a year that ended with a 7-10-2 mark.
