OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State volleyball team dropped its first game of the season to Keuka College, 3-0 (17-25, 19-25, 12-25), Wednesday night at Max Ziel Gymnasium. The Storm used aggressive serving that produced 12 aces to keep the Laker offense out of rhythm all night. Meaghan Puff (So., Newfane, N.Y.) and Kim Grice (Jr., Syracuse, N.Y.) posted five kills apiece for Oswego State, which moved to 0-1 overall. Keuka improved to 3-0 on the season.
It was a tight first set tied at 15-all until the Storm’s Brittany Smyder stepped behind the service line, as she rattled off three aces during a 6-0 run to give Keuka a 21-15 edge. Puff ended the scoring streak with one of her kills, but Jillian Nolan posted an ace to end the set by the score of 25-17.
The Lakers fought back from an early five-point deficit in the second set before scoring five consecutive points to even the set at 11-11. The score went back-and-forth until the Storm put together another small run to create the necessary gap en route to a 25-19 set decision.
In the third set, Keuka found its rhythm on offense and started to block at the net as it strung out 11 straight points to take an early 14-3 lead and cruised to the 25-12 set win.
Kara Michelsen (Fr., Lake View, N.Y.) finished the match with 14 assists for Oswego State, while libero Sam Manicone (Fr., Copiague, N.Y.) contributed nine digs. The Storm were paced by nine kills from Paige Golden with Jillian Nolan added 11 assists and Hannah Doody registering 11 digs.
The Lakers compete at the Potsdam/Victory Promotions Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
