OSWEGO – The fifth annual Oswego YMCA Dragon Boat Festival will be held August 19 and 20, overlooking beautiful Lake Ontario at Breitbeck Park.
The Oswego YMCA has partnered again with 22 Dragons from Montreal, Canada to bring dragon boat racing to Oswego. Community, corporate, and student teams will race 40-foot long authentic Hong Kong-style dragon boats along a 200-meter course in the Oswego Harbor.
The festivities will start Friday night with the ‘Awakening of the Dragon’ opening ceremonies followed by the Heroes Challenge starting at 5 p.m.
After military, police, fire, and EMS teams race in the Heroes Challenge there will be a 15-minute fireworks show over Lake Ontario.
Main event team racing will start at 9 a.m. Saturday and will run well into the afternoon.
This is a spectator friendly event and you are encouraged to come out and support all of the teams and enjoy the festivities.
The festival is a fundraiser for the Oswego YMCA.
Money raised from this festival provides access to youth, families and seniors in the Oswego County community to YMCA programs such as Y Day Camp, SACC-School Age Child Care, swim lessons, membership, senior programming and more. In 2015 the Oswego YMCA provided $63,000 in program scholarships.
Teams are still being accepted.
All skill levels and physiques can paddle, making it the ultimate team building sport, requiring synchronicity and finesse, more than power to win.
Team categories include: Corporate, Community and Student.
Each team has 21 members.
Teams are given one practice session the week leading up to the event.
Additional practices are available for teams that reach specific fundraising goals.
There will be food and beverages available in the park with the support of Jimmie James BBQ including a Chicken BBQ fundraiser Friday night.
Tickets for the BBQ can be purchased at the Oswego YMCA.
