Digital mammography is now available at Oswego Health locations in Fulton and Oswego Hospital.

The digital mammography technology will also soon be available at Oswego Health’s location in Pulaski.

Digital mammography will allow Oswego Health to provide its patients with the highest quality of care in the prevention and early detection of breast cancer. This technology allows the radiologist to view the x-ray image more closely, zeroing in on suspicious or concerning areas, enabling them to make immediate decisions about additional images.

Digital mammography takes less than half the time of traditional film-based exams and the radiologist may review the images while the patient is in the examination room.

“With this technology, our radiologists will be provided images that capture much more information, especially from younger women and women with dense breast tissue,” said Kevin Kain, Oswego Health director of imaging. “For our patients the comfort is enhanced and their results are available much quicker. In addition, we will be able to send images electronically to a patient’s physician for consultation. We will also eliminate the possibility of lost films. The images will be stored electronically and if the patient needs to take images to her physician they can be put on a CD.”

In conjunction with the digital mammography unit, Oswego Health is also offering Computer-Aided Detection. CAD provides a “second read” of the mammogram by a computer. This assists the radiologist in making an accurate diagnosis by highlighting areas of subtle increase or decrease in density on the images.
