Flu Activity on the Rise Across the County and the State

OSWEGO COUNTY – The Oswego County Health Department reports that there has been an increase in influenza cases across the state in recent weeks. As people prepare for holiday gatherings, local public health officials remind them to get their flu vaccination to help ensure a safe and healthy season.

Influenza cases reported to the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) have increased 79.59% in the last two weeks of November.

“The flu is widespread across New York State right now and we are seeing similar numbers here in Oswego County as well,” said Oswego County Supervising Public Health Nurse Jennifer Purtell. “Flu activity is unpredictable and we fully expect to see the number of cases continue to rise in the coming weeks.

“Getting vaccinated now will provide you with protection for upcoming holiday gatherings and carry you through the rest of the season,” she added. “It typically takes about two weeks to develop immunity after a flu shot, so it’s not too late. The vaccination will still protect you even though the season has already started.”

Influenza vaccine effectiveness can vary from year to year and among different age and risk groups. In addition, the flu vaccine can reduce the risk of flu-associated hospitalization, especially among children and older adults. It may also help your symptoms feel more mild if you do get sick.

“Getting the flu vaccine is easy, and it’s the most important thing you can do to protect yourself and your family from influenza,” said Oswego County Associate Public Health Educator Diane Oldenburg.

Influenza is a contagious respiratory disease that can lead to serious complications, including hospitalization or even death. Those aged 6 months or older are recommended to get vaccinated against the flu every year.

Those experiencing flu-like symptoms should contact their health care provider to discuss the need for antiviral medications. This is particularly important for those at high risk of complications such as children younger than age 2, adults aged 65 and older, and those with chronic health conditions.

To help prevent the spread of flu and other respiratory illnesses, follow these healthy habits:

  • Wash hands frequently
  • Cover coughs and sneezes
  • Stay home if you are sick
  • Stay away from people who are sick
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth
