OSWEGO — Oswego Health has promoted Erin Spilman, RN, BSN, to clinical educator, the health system announced in a November 2 release.
Spilman joined Oswego Health as a nursing assistant in 2013 and became a registered nurse in 2017. Her experience includes medical-surgical nursing, home care and work in the Emergency Department since 2018. She also managed school-based health centers for ConnextCare and taught Certified Nursing Assistant classes through CiTi BOCES.
In her new position, Spilman will oversee onboarding and orientation for new clinical staff, provide clinical education and training, support the implementation of policies and procedures, and assist with continuing professional development. Oswego Health said the work is intended to equip staff with the knowledge, resources and confidence needed for patient care.
Cheryl Stilwell, RN, BNSc, executive director of nursing, said the organization seeks to help employees move into leadership roles. She cited Spilman’s clinical experience, interest in education and support for colleagues as strengths that will help her serve both newly hired and experienced staff.
Spilman is pursuing a Master of Science in Nursing in Leadership and Management at Grand Canyon University, with graduation anticipated in May 2027. She previously earned an associate’s degree in business management from Finger Lakes Community College and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Western Governors University.
Spilman said she wants to strengthen clinical staff members’ knowledge and skills through practical learning, education and professional development. She also wants employees to feel supported in their growth and comfortable asking questions and learning from experience.
Her priorities include tying education to patient care, building staff confidence, supporting quality improvement and improving patient safety and outcomes. She also hopes to advance palliative care education and contribute to future programs that help patients and families facing serious illness receive individualized care with dignity.
Stilwell said promoting employees and supporting their professional growth strengthens the workforce, benefits patient care and develops future healthcare leaders.
Spilman was born and raised in Minetto and Oswego. According to the release, she looks forward to helping the health system’s clinical teams continue developing their skills.
