Oz Roller Girls To Launch Junior Derby League

OSWEGO — The Oz Roller Girls will begin training the next generation of roller derby players with the launch of a junior league for girls ages 10 to 18.

The Oz Roller Girls' decision to form a junior roller derby team means local teens like (from left) Cassie Ashby and Michaela Kush will no longer have to travel a couple hours to take part in junior derby training and events. Inviting girls ages 10 to 18, the junior roller derby team will have an informational meeting as part of the Oz Roller Girls' open house/recruitment at 7 p.m. Sept. 17.

More information will be available for potential skaters and parents at an open house/recruitment night, free and open to the public, at 7 p.m. Sept. 17, in the OzZone in Oswego’s Midtown Plaza.

Organizers will provide details of the six-week training course for junior skaters.

The open house also will feature recruitment for adult skaters for the existing league, as well as for referees and other volunteers. Attendees can meet members of the Oz Roller Girls, see roller derby demonstrations, hear about the fitness benefits of participating and ask questions about the sport or the league.

The community also can catch live roller derby on Saturday, Sept. 15, when the Oz Roller Girls host Assault City Roller Derby’s Assault Squad in Oswego’s Crisafulli Rink.

Doors open at 5 p.m. with a 6 p.m. start for the superhero-themed bout, titled “Star Pass of Doom.” Tickets for the Sept. 15 bout cost $15 for trackside VIP, $10 for general admission, $5 for kids age 4 to 12, with children 3 and under admitted free.
