Pat Ward Out Duels Jimmy Phelps to Become the First Repeat Big Block Modifieds Winner at the Fulton Speedway

By Dave Medler

FULTON, NY  – Pat Ward came into Saturday night at the Fulton speedway looking to improve from the problems he had the night before at the Brewerton Speedway. Ward did just that as he was able to run down defending track champion Jimmy Phelps with 2 laps to go to win the 35 lap Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified Feature. With the victory Ward becomes the first repeat winner in the Modifieds this season.

Other winners on WOLF 105.1 New Country night were, Billy Clark Jr., SUNY Canton Sportsman, Tim Sears Jr., NAPA Late Models, Doug Williams, Mod Lites, CJ Castelletti, E&V Energy Novice Sportsman and Mark Johnston, Gladiators.

Mike Bowman would lead the opening lap of the 35 lap Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified Feature before Mike Mahaney would take over two circuits later.

With 5 laps complete Mahaney still led by a slim margin running the bottom, you could have thrown a blanket over Bowman, Ryan Phelps and Jimmy Phelps as they fought for the runner-up spot.

With Mahaney leading, Ryan Phelps went to the top side to run down Mahaney and on lap 9 shot by into the lead.

On lap 11, Jimmy Phelps moved to 2nd then set his sights on the leader, Mahaney, Bowman and Pat Ward raced for third through fifth keeping the top-two within sight.

At the halfway point feeling the pressure from Jimmy Phelps, Ryan Phelps started diamonding off the corners to open a quarter of a straightaway lead.

With 10 laps to go, Jimmy Phelps caught Ryan Phelps as they ran nose to tail and side by side for the lead just before a yellow came out for a slowing Alan Johnson. Ryan Phelps, Jimmy Phelps, Mahaney, Ward and Billy Decker would lineup for a 10 lap dash to the finish.

On the restart Jimmy Phelps saw the bottom open up and took advantage shooting into the lead on lap 26 as he looked to take off from the pack to grab the win over the remaining laps.

Ward would move to 2nd on lap 27 setting up a dash to the checkers with Phelps.

Phelps would run the bottom in turns one and two, and the top in three and four in an effort to hold off Ward, who he started to see right next to him as the laps clicked off to the finish.

In one last ditch effort to get by the defending track champion, Ward went hard into one and two on the top and found enough speed exiting two to drive by Phelps and grab the lead with two to go. Over the final couple laps Ward wasn’t going to be denied as he was first under the checkers for the popular win. Jimmy Phelps, Billy Decker, Ryan Phelps and Dale Planck rounded out the top-five. Ward also won the Rudy’s Of Oswego Hard Charger of the race award.

In the wild 20 lap SUNY Canton Sportsman Feature Sean McCarthy would lead the opening 3 laps before Greg Mrzywka would take the lead on lap 4 from his 8th starting position. Mrzywka somehow would lead for the next 9 laps with a left front flat till Billy Clark who started 15th would take the lead on lap 14. Over the final laps Clark would hold off Jeremy Pitcher for the win. Greg Kimball, Gregg Carner and Greg Mrzywka rounded out the top-five.

Tim Sears Jr. took advantage of his up front starting spot grabbing the lead on the opening lap then holding off all challengers to pick up his first 20 lap NAPA Late Model win at the Fulton Speedway. Sean Beardsley, Alan Fink, Steve Coit and Dale Caswell finished second through Fifth.

In the Mod Lites Doug Williams won his third feature out of four starts over Rick Demo, Josh DeSantis Jr., Jeremy Isabell and Sam Usborne in the 15 lap main.

Sauquoit Valley High School Student CJ Castelletti picked up his first ever E&V Energy Novice Sportsman win, as he out distanced Ron Davis III, Derek Warren, Jim Graham and Sean Sommers at the finish.

In the exciting Gladiator Feature, Mark Johnston held off repeated challenges from Skip DeGroff winning by a half a car length at the finish. Chris Bonoffski, Eric M Zirbel and Keith Zirbel chased the top-two across the line.
