FULTON – The Oswego County Humane Society is excited to announce an award of $500,000 though the New York State Companion Animal Capital Fund to support renovation plans in their recently purchased building. The main goals of these renovations are housing for adoptable cats and dogs on-site, updates to the plumbing and HVAC systems, installation of epoxy flooring, and creating an isolation room, all to accommodate the needs of the organization’s programs.
“While OCHS believes that a foster-based system is best for cats and dogs, having a space for animals on-site can increase their adoption potential through visibility and positive socialization with the community,” says Executive Director Katrina Drumm. “On-site kennels for dogs and rooms for cats also allows for respite care and breaks for our fosters.” An isolation room can be used for many purposes, such as temporary housing for found animals, a quarantine area for recently surrendered pets, or a short-term holding area until a foster home is ready.
A milestone itself, after 25 years of operation, the Oswego County Humane Society purchased the property at 171 Mitchell Street, Oswego, New York in early 2024. OCHS has been using the space mainly as an office and operating its spay/neuter clinic and Pet Food Pantry out of the location, but it sees a greater potential in what the organization could be for the community, including expansion of its adoption potential, on-site humane education, and expansion of its clinic for low-cost spay/neuter services.
The Oswego County Humane Society is currently drawing up plans for a capital campaign to complement the grant that will help to fund additional animal spaces and other building improvements. Renovations are projected to begin later this year, followed by a Grand Opening and Open House to celebrate the improvements with the public.
