Hunting Is A Tradition Worth Preserving

A Legislative Column from Assemblyman Will Barclay

The transition from summer to fall might mean cooler air, pumpkin-flavored everything, if you’re into that, and, for me, memories of celebrating Halloween with my family. For nearly 700,000 New Yorkers, it also means hunting season is underway.

Hunting has been part of life in our state for generations. More than simply bringing people outdoors, it teaches patience, responsibility and respect for wildlife. And while not everyone hunts, nor should anyone be admonished for their views, it is important to recognize the role this tradition continues to play in our state.

It’s indisputable that hunting provides economic benefits to upstate communities. Hunters support local sporting goods stores, restaurants, gas stations and other small businesses, particularly in rural areas where that spending makes a difference. Hunting generates an estimated $2.6 billion annually for our recreational economy through licenses, equipment, travel and lodging. Regulated hunting also aids in wildlife management and conservation, ultimately helping maintain healthy populations.

As more people become disconnected from rural life and the outdoors, hunting can sometimes be misunderstood or dismissed. But New York’s hunting traditions deserve to be respected, and decisions affecting hunters should be grounded in an understanding of the communities that depend on them. We should be working to preserve opportunities for future generations to enjoy the outdoors and carry these traditions forward.

As hunting season gets underway, I encourage hunters to review the latest state regulations and guidelines and make the most of the season. Happy fall and happy hunting season!
