Statement From Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay On Gov. Hochul’s Revival Of Nyc Congestion Pricing

“In June, Gov. Hochul had a lot to say about New York City congestion pricing, when she rightfully took the costly new tax off the table:

‘This decision is … about standing up for the hard-working men and women who get up every single day, do their jobs and just want a fair shake. The little guy who feels no one listens to them. I’m here to say, we are listening. This decision is about you.’

Unfortunately for those hardworking men and women, the governor’s disingenuous performance as a champion for affordability lasted fewer than six months.

Kathy Hochul delayed congestion pricing so Democrats could avoid the issue in this year’s campaigns. President Trump’s public opposition to the program and his imminent return to the White House threatens the possibility of a commuter tax. Those political realities are behind today’s announcement and what has driven New York Democrats to dig deeper into the pockets of already overburdened families and businesses.

Ironically, when pausing congestion pricing earlier this year Gov. Hochul said, ‘circumstances have changed.’ Outside of politics, New York’s most significant economic change since June is the state Division of the Budget finding $2.6 billion more revenue than originally projected. Even positive financial news can’t prevent Democrats from bleeding taxpayers dry.

It’s undeniable that President Trump’s landslide victory was fueled largely by Americans’ persistent frustration about high prices, cost of living and inflation. Apparently, Gov. Hochul wasn’t listening. Under Democratic rule in New York, the affordability crisis has been especially damaging. Today, Gov. Hochul and her allies have made sure it’s here to stay.”
